I was going on a date. A first date. Ever. (Well, Pizza Hut with your teenage boyfriend after drama club with your pocket-money doesn’t count as a date, does it?) A first date. With my boss. Who was nine years older than me.

Beneath the sumptuously detailed plasterwork of the ceiling, Anna and Bean faced one another to pledge that no matter what adversity besieged them - whether it be snowed in wedding guests or major life changing moments - they would face these things together. I love getting inspired by the book that I'm reading. I recently picked up this author who I hadn't read since an A-Level essay on one of his other novels and was immediately smiling by this opening passage. I'm sure he'd be aghast at my amusement.
